New series from me: Phrase girls.

This is my idea of a "Golden Girl"

C&C Welcome.
zestroy 2005/6/27 - 8:22:37
its nice to see that you've tried to make the character more interesting with that tattoo at her left eye. I would suggest however, that you make the contrast at the place where her hood meets the background sharper. I didn't know that it is her hood rather than the background until I watched the animation.
maggie_sue 2005/6/30 - 1:53:8
I think before trying any sort of realism, you need a reference of some sort, just to get a better feel for placement of facial features and so on. Grab yourself a reference.

I noticed in your animation you use guidelines. However, I also notice that once you place them, you don't scoot back and look for areas in need of correction. In the first phase of your drawing (the gesture) you should look for things that seem out of place or are of the wrong proportion. In this case, the eyes are far to large and too close together. When you look at your guidelines, be sure that the eyes are about one eye length apart. Umm...for rest of placement.... [link]

Eyes lie about midway between top of head and chin
Nose about midway between eyes and chin
Mouth about midway between nose and chin
Hairline about midway between top of head and eyes.
I did that quickie 'kaki as a reference of facial feature placement. Also, measure the eyelength and compare it to the space between the eyes--you'll see the eyes are one eyelength apart from each other, as stated earlier.

Now, as far as your coloring--not only could you get much darker on your shaded areas, but I also see some splotchy coloring where you didn't fill in the whole area. When working with colors, don't be afraid to lay them on. Work your colors in layers. One trick my Advanced Anatomy Drawing prof. taught me was to look at your model and squint so all you can really see are blobs of color. That's where your matte color will lay, and from there you build on up to your darkest darks. I'm still working on my color tutorial, so I hope you get to take a look on how to really work that color and avoid using black and white as shades and highlights.
Speaking of highlights, no realistic (clean) hair I've seen is that shiny--unless you're on a Pantine commercial. Again, hair is big blobs of color. Get your lights and darks, than fill between. Ease up on the white on the highlights. When referring to the Six Categories of Light, highlight is the very lightest category--only reserved for those areas on which the lightsourse is directly aimed. If there were light aimed directly in front of this golden girl, her face would be lightened to the same degree, if not more(remember, skin reflects color/light more than people realize). Goodness...I think I've babbled enough. I really hope some of my words help you out. Keep 'em coming, your hard work is paying off. Good luck.

silentlyscreaminginside 2005/6/28 - 19:11:49
This picture is so pretty I really like it. Keep up the good work!
snoopywar 2005/6/29 - 10:18:49
I really like her expression. She looks so relaxed. :)
And the white birds in the black sort of give it a hope kind of feel. ^^
maggie_sue 2005/6/30 - 2:0:56
solids are so fun to use...and you use them well. I especially like how you used a blue/purple solid in some areas to really pull off that cooling effect that color can have on shaded areas. (YAY! SOMEONE FINALLY GETS IT!) I also noticed the blue on the orange headband (compliments) and the wristband (again, compliments!). Also, adding these colors to your pic really made those dark values pop compared to just adding darker shades of tan or brown to the skin. VERY very well done, I'm glad someone else caught on to the colors train. THAT, love, is how you work color.
happywaterbottle 2005/6/30 - 11:55:33
yesh i kept thinking about you while coloring this picture, maggie :)
thanks ppl for all the nice comments ^o^

happywaterbottle 2005/6/26 - 10:52:4
so kewl. I really like this picture. The colors are very nice and I love the effect you did on her skin with the texture. It looks like she's behind a screen or something, and her hand (which looks fantasticaly real) is sticking out. That little light ball thingie looks awesome too *o*
*pushes the picture into Polished*
snoopywar 2005/6/26 - 12:41:29

mitsu 2005/6/26 - 21:6:23
Oh, Mika!!! Freakin' amazing rendering. :OOOOO Strangely enough, the fingers/hand are my fave part of this, but 'tis all inspiring. The "TV lines" are a great touch. \O/
silentlyscreaminginside 2005/6/28 - 19:14:6

Title: UFO Tofu - Victor Wooten

A bit of atonement for the crap I posted earlier in this room, my first realism oekaki. Some fanart of the bassist for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, one of my all time favorite bands.

I'll have to admit I don't know them at all...but I like how you've done this, it reminds me of something you'ld see on a Jazz CD cover....:)

On a sidenote:- 'Little fluffy clouds' a reference to 'The Orb' mayhaps?
mateem 2005/6/26 - 23:45:4
Thanks and BING! You got it! At least that's where it first came to me, love that song.

You should really check them out, they specialize in exploring new ways of playing instruments, or in Future Man's case (the drummer and this dude's bro) a new intstrument altogether.
zestroy 2005/6/27 - 8:19:18
reminds me of pastel on brown paper =D
quite interesting ^^

'Tis my sister. I don't think it took that long. I was kinda drooling over Laguna while my sister was playing Final Fantasy... I think this is my first picture I drew without using outlines.
eevee 2005/6/25 - 11:41:11
I really like the lips and teeth <3 Good that you didn't use solid white on the teeth like alot of people normally do, which kinda could ruin a realism drawing. Also I'm loving her glasses :3
lorelai 2005/6/25 - 11:45:26
Great work!! I'll be back to watch the animation on this one. I can't stand doing lineless work, it bores me to tears. Impressive <3!~!!
remi-187 2005/6/25 - 16:48:36
Very Impressive! VERY!
mika-kun 2005/6/26 - 2:5:16
Wow!, you did an absolutely great job on them teeth....the whole thing in fact!......excellent stuff!
sugarcoma 2005/6/26 - 13:7:25

Oh, sugar. I hit the submit button by accident when attempting to scroll down. ::bashes touch pad::
Anyway. !!! ::plays Pomp and Circumstance until your ears bleed:: I graduated too recently... :D. Isn't it WONDERFUL finally being done? I cried, knowing that I'll miss all my fond school memories... ::coughs:: Definitely not because I was so happy to finally get out of that hell hole. Nope, not at all... :D;
happywaterbottle 2005/6/24 - 12:14:53
omg I had my prom yesterday. it was wonderful :D I surprisingly wasn't sad at neither graduation and prom. I had lotsa fun :)
nice picture! you're improving really fast! Only thing that bugs me is that the skin tones are not the same all over the face. except for the shading there... but you can see there are two colors. other than that, it's a really pretty oekaki! the bg looks great :D
lorelai 2005/6/24 - 20:50:47
Congratulations Emz ^_^
OMG happywaterbottle i'm so happy for you! PICTURES YES PLEASE!!!! Or at least oekaki versions :D

lorelai 2005/6/23 - 22:0:28
Omg i sniff a series! So cool ^O^ She's so gorgeous...
maggie_sue 2005/6/24 - 2:15:4
like her lips...and the colors!!!
her eyes are lovely too.

Might consider defining the hairline a bit, abide by the linework you laid down on her forehead and color accordingly.

overall, nice work.
maggie_sue 2005/6/24 - 2:16:33
and even though I don't believe in this junk, I am technically a scorpio.
bananarana 2005/6/24 - 5:0:32
I am so gonna do the Chinese Zodiac now... >.>
You've corrupted me, and I'm not sure if it's a good corruption or a bad corruption. D:
mika-kun 2005/6/26 - 2:2:30
Hehehe Lore! this series has been running for a while now, can't be that many left...?.
She does look totally how I imagine a Scorpio should look, love that stinger over her shoulder (from afar that is!)....:)
silentlyscreaminginside 2005/6/28 - 19:16:38
It's very pretty! I really like your zodiac pictures.

Wow.....beautiful. What's even more beautiful is that here is somebody who knows when to put a work in the polished room. You are a goddess. m(__)m

:) And did I mention the picture is beautiful? I mean, look at those subtle folds.... ;_;
mika-kun 2005/6/23 - 16:10:4
Serenely peaceful and simply beautiful....
bananarana 2005/6/24 - 5:1:31
So peaceful and quiet, saying more will ruin the serenity.

Title: Ego

W00t for semi-attempts at foreshortening! No, he doesn't have a fist of doom thang goin' on. Agonized over the BG for a bit at the end. I'm really happy with the wings.

C&C welcome!

Um... and subtract 2 hours from that time.
maggie_sue 2005/6/22 - 13:3:53
I like the perspective on this, and the wings are gorgeous!

my only crit is the shading--looks like you used black for the shading, which can be a big no-no. Makes it look bulky, not well-blended, and black actually lays flat against a canvas instead of creating form. Try some cool colors to go with the blues in the hair and the blues in the wings...and, since your skintone is on the orangy side, a blue would finish the shading off perfectly. Also, on the face, the blue hair would reflect some color onto the skin.

When shading with color, it's not always about getting darker. When you look at a shadow, you can tell it's not black. In your case, the compliment of the skin color would be sort of a neutralized blue--a dull blue, not black. Now, I'm sure as I re-read my comment, I will find I have probably confused you beyond belief...
bananarana 2005/6/23 - 4:33:29
Wiiiiiings are wicked awesome. I love 'em. Now I'm inspired to make some winged character of my own. +__o; I think a bit more shading around the chest area would be lovely--define his muscles! We can see that they're "hinted" (not a very good word) due to the lineart, but some shading there would really help with that perception. I like my boys big and strong. ;D
Question for maggie_sue about shading; shall I email you? Was just wondering if you'd walk me through a picture so I'd finally stop using black for shades, and more blues/violets. Seems to be a pet peeve of yours, hehe.
lorelai 2005/6/23 - 11:26:43
Well, the fist didn't quite work out in the foreshortening, but these things really take time rather than critiques to correct. So keep at it :) and take pictures/observe! ^_^ I too am in love with those wings. He actually makes having butterfly wings look...a bit more manly :O

I approve of the simple purple background. Better than trying to fit anything else in and taking away from the wings <3
maggie_sue 2005/6/23 - 14:49:42
banana, it's no pet peeve, it's the way to shade-and yes, you can email me.
mateem 2005/6/24 - 14:49:23
maggie_sue - I totally know what you mean on the using black for shading thing. It's a bad habit I revert back to when I'm not watching myself too carefully. -_-; My mind was on seven hundred different tracks when I was doing this (bad times). Looking at this now, I'm wishing that I had submitted it to the doodle board instead of polished.

bananarana - the lack of defnition on his chest was part laziness from me, and partially where I was going with the piece. Someone was lamenting on the claimed status on one of my characters, so I just decided to just whip out another pretty boy, and her type of pretty boys don't have much in the way of muscles.

lorelai- *laughs* I'm not quite sure what I was doing with that fist... I really need to sit down and do some arm/hand studies. XD I love putting oxymorons together... a manly butterfly. =D

I'm glad you all liked the wings so much! Ironically, those were the easiest part... besides the hair. XD

Pisces Horoscope for today:

If you're hesitating before repeating that juicy gossip you just heard, well, your instincts are good. Spreading the word won't do you any favors now -- and it's likely the story's less than entirely accurate.

And I loved doing the starfishes so much that I made up a song for them, heeheehee
embo 2005/6/21 - 17:18:57
aha! i don't know why, but this picture is just so appealing to the eye. awesome colors & character. and shading! :O
maggie_sue 2005/6/21 - 17:47:26
lol, horoscopes?(waves the bull sh#@ flag) more like common sense to me. I do like all the fun colors on this! and how you made the little shells striped like that... very lovely. I love the eyes the best.
rt_emily_nguyen 2005/6/21 - 17:48:19
great job on the highlights of the eyes! i like how you did the shells too :3
happywaterbottle 2005/6/21 - 18:35:31
oh wow, this is really pretty! she's really cute ^^ I love the idea you had for pisces! Her necklace is awesome :D the shading is great! gotta love teh purple hair ^^
awesome job!
snoopywar 2005/6/21 - 19:18:9
I like her ears and eyes the most. :)
mika-kun 2005/6/22 - 1:14:5
Gah! I'd hate to have to pick my favourite one out of the series as they are all awesome, I'm definately going to have to get them all together in one big pic and save them to my computer....:)
bananarana 2005/6/23 - 4:36:23
That's meeee! ::points ecstatically:: See see? Compare my blue skin and fin ears with her--oh wait a minute. But really, I'm pisces. And I'm glad you made her a mermaid, because I wasn't sure what I'd do if I saw fish with human arms and legs sticking out of it (if anyone's seen/read The Slayers, just think of Noonsa). Happy that you made her sooo prettty. :D Now everyone go buy me a gift for the birthday that has already passed. >(
