woah, timer's over by about 7 hours...

so my handskills have gone completely sour, which is to be expected after over a year's absence.

thought I'd say hi anyway. hope some of you kiddos remember me-I was a Mod here for a while.
I was looking at my old oekaki's (through all like, 1200 of them) and was wondering how I could have ever possibly thought I was good at this.

It's funny how rediculously picky I've become. Graphic Designers=snobs most of the time, and I've moved myself to that category.
Anyway, I'm very passionate about what I do now, enough to pay over $50,000 for a piece of paper that licenses me to mess with people's minds using type and image. That's right. Gradumatated. Finally. I have the power-now I need a job... >.<

anyway, just wanting to see what all my old 'kaki buddies are up to. Comment if you like, or if you don't like. Either way.
dorothyblueeyes 2007/5/5 - 5:6:29
awww, it[s very good. Don't worry about "skills-rott"; you should see me, after college; I can never reach back to the level of compentency in painting, that I had in college; I am rotted out. It's just age,and the other stuff of life. You CHANGE, too. Boy, do we all. Change is not all good. But, you cant stop it. Just practice a lot more, you'll get better, that's fine. No perfectionism, please, we all have plenty of that, do we not?? hehe hehe. ; )
dorothyblueeyes 2007/5/5 - 5:10:57
Graphic designing and snobbery?Yeah, which is probably why I went into teaching cooking;it's easier to be nice to people there.

I like being kind, nice, and helpful to people, not being a snob,or being around them.I'd rather teach some poor guy how to boil water, than be the Head of design for Big-Macho,&Big Firm, with all the attendent problems.
lorelai 2007/5/5 - 14:49:45
i think i missed the snobbery boat or something. I didn't know graphic artists were snobs OR picky :) I didn't know you picked this route for your career! I hope you're ready to beef up your portfolio fast :)
maggie_sue 2007/5/5 - 19:52:33
I got my portfolio already

as far as the snob train--I tend to notice what I consider "bad design" a lot more and become disgusted with it. It's kinda funny. My husband always tells me to give it a rest because I can pick out typeface and point size on just about any printed collatoral and tell him exactly what's not working about it.
I guess I've learned new rules in design that didn't always apply to me as an fine artist.
It's not a matter of kindness when it comes to deciding what I like and what I don't like. Like this oekaki and all my others... I don't like them anymore and it's because I've developed a different sense then what I used to have. Lol many of my former professors have instilled in me this mindset that "as designers, we know everything." and I'm finding that to be true in working with actual clients. Anyway, just wanted to drop in. Maybe I'll continue to lurk around for a bit while I have some free time on my hands.
I missed you guys.
mika 2007/5/6 - 3:13:35

Some graphic artists and indeed some artists in general can be amazingly snobby, which is really something when you see some of the crap they do, however I don't think it's a required skill as most of the real good ones are actually very helpful and supportive of 'lesser artists'.....anyway I haven't got time to discuss this with you riff raff as I'm orf to play my grand piaar-no.
lorelai 2007/5/7 - 23:14:52
My only advice to you as a graphic designer, and as an artist in general, is to open your mind to learning from others. You can learn from those whose skills are below you just as well as from those whose skills are above you - and in the end, you are not the best judge of that in the first place, so best to be safe and learn from everyone! =D

Obviosly I love red heads and elves. And really suck at backgrounds.
mika 2007/4/30 - 8:30:26
I won't ask why you love red heads so much as looking at the pic tells me why....and of course the 'Elf' bit is a bonus too.........play down the background if you aren't that good at them, if the subject is good you can get away with a simple shadowy blur and it'll add loads to the main bit......:D
dorothyblueeyes 2007/5/5 - 5:12:37
yeah, shadowy blurs for background is fine.very nice redhead. (we redheads rule)

I'm not sure it's polished room quality- it's been a while since I produced one of those. This is my view of Elizabeth Bennet (through my re-reading of P&P) and she's coming home from a ball, hair mussed from the constant dancing, a book in hand, ready to wind down. I apologize, as I could not get the intensity and emotion in her eyes as Mr. Darcy seems so fond of.

jakusama 2007/4/22 - 0:15:38
Awww... I love your shading.. as usual..and I really like her hair for some reason. Like. Really. ...really.
insomniel 2007/4/24 - 21:10:56
looks lovely! i could guess who it is right away.
dorothyblueeyes 2007/5/5 - 5:14:16
very nice. I like it. Well it's hard to illustrate the personality of one of yer favorite books;everyone has a different image of what she looks like. But this is great.

It seems incomplete to me but I don't know what else to do. And I'm not very good at backgrounds. By the way it's my first time posting here. I've looked at some of your artwork and they're amazing. Hopefully I'llb e like that one day.
mika 2007/4/30 - 8:26:12
Welcome, you are off to a good start in catching up with the more accomplished artists.....keep practising and you'll be amazed at how far you can go.....:)

maemay 2007/5/4 - 14:53:3

Half an hour short of polished room D: (i should take more time next time :P )
I had alot of trouble with his nose.. It never looked WRONG but it never looked right, either.
Anyway, its Sasuke. I've had trouble drawing my own characters, so I've diverted into fanart a little.
