Woot! a test room tutorial! (after several years)
1/ Define shape with Pen tool on around 33-50% opacity, doesn't have to be accurate.
2/ Define shape some more with Pen tool on around 10-20% opacity (set to 0 pixels)
3/ Start to define mass, I use a seperate layer and the pen tool set to around 33% (size dependent on area I want to cover) - Layer can be darkened or lightened using the opacity slider, when happy merge the two layers.......I can do this over and over depending on what I want to achieve, here it was once.
4/ On a seperate (preferably behind) layer add in a full block of standard grey and use Airbrush tool set at 5% to lighten the hi-lights, or use Soft Eraser set to around 10%.
5/ On a seprate layer (above) use the Airbrush at 5% to lighten and add some texture then use the Soft erase at 5-10% to delete the areas above the dark areas you wish to keep.
The eye on the right isn't finished as I was running out of time.
Use layers to control depth (opacity slider) and add texture.....add many and only merge when you are happy, kill hard edges with Soft tool but beware the glitches it throws up (add layer, Merge current layer with it and delete the empty layer to stop the glitches)

whoo! Now I don't have to crack your head open and steal your artistic secrets...what a relief, brains can be so messy ^_^
In all seriousness though, on behalf of everyone at TACo, I thank you for sharing your bits of wisdom

Very cool tutorial. I like the definition around the eye on the right.
I'll eventually get around to using layers, probably.

Nice idea, technique and picture :) I like how it's all sketchy in the beginning.
