sorry for uploading an unfinished picture, but I realy need help. I've been fighting with this picture to look realistic and the more I try the messier it looks. I could really use some tips on shading and what colors I should use to make it look more alive. Please help!

Tippage - Right click on the colour sliders to get it into H/S/B mode (that's Hue/Saturation/Blend(?)) drop blend down for shadow and up for hi-lights on the colour you have chosen.
Shade and hi-light on another layer, use the airbrush set on around 2-5% opacity and build up, get hard edges by erasing with the soft eraser set to 50% opacity for 1 pixel or 2-20% for above 1 pixel - for the love of god stay away from the hard eraser unless you are blitzing it.
Use blur lots, if you get artifacts make a new layer copy the artifacted layer to it and delete the original (Delete not clear as the artifacts remain on the layer for good)
If it all goes wrong simply delete the layer and start again.
Anything sticking out will catch hi-lights, anything recessed will be shadowed depending on the light source - Imaging the face as a series of shapes and shade/hi-light as such.
The anatomy needs a slight re-think before you continue though.
